Christmas time in the West is filled with many traditions that make this festive season full of sentiment. This includes hanging up stockings by fireplace for Santa to fill at Christmas Eve. It’s not clear when it became a Christmas tradition and the origin is somewhat vague. According to one of the more popular legend, it comes from the fourth century, involving Santa Claus who is based off of St. Nicholas.

One day while Nicholas past through a town, he heard of a man who was grieving his wife’s death. He lost his poor fortune and even unable to pay a dowry for his three daughters. Upon hearing the news, Nicholas who was generous and kind sneaked into the man’s house and put gold coins in the daughters’ stockings which were hanging by the fireplace to dry over night. The poor man unexpectedly got the donations and could finally pay dowries for his daughters. From that time on, children would hang the stockings they wore by their fireplace.

Today, the tradition is continued with handmade or ready-made store bought Christmas stockings replaced the regularly worn stockings. You may also have socks factory to make a custom Christmas stockings if you want to have a very unique one. The home-made stockings have the names of each family member stitched on them. Children look forward to Christmas Eve to hang their socks and some try to stay awake to see how Santa filled them with gifts. The stockings are usually filled with small gifts such as candy, toys, money and games known as “stocking stuffers.” As we all know, those are all from their mothers and fathers but not Santa. However, one of the most enjoyable parts of Christmas morning has always been stocking opening!
